Tongue-tie affects 4-11% of newborns according to the National Institute of Health
The first step in the tongue-tie surgery process is an initial consultation with a pediatric dentist or orthodontist, like Dr. Maddy Goodman or Dr. Heather Sholander at Harmony Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics. During this appointment, the doctor will examine the child's mouth and assess the severity of the tongue-tie. They may ask about any symptoms the child has been experiencing, such as difficulty eating or speaking. They will also explain the procedure in detail and answer any questions the parents may have.
On the day of the procedure, the child will be made as comfortable as possible. A local anesthetic may be used to numb the area. The doctor will then use a small, sterile scissors or a laser to cut the frenulum. The entire procedure usually takes less than 15 minutes.
After the procedure, the doctor will provide instructions for aftercare, which may include exercises for the child to do at home to prevent the frenulum from reattaching. Regular follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor healing and assess improvement in tongue movement and related symptoms.
One of the most immediate benefits of tongue-tie surgery is improved feeding. This is particularly crucial for infants who have been struggling with breastfeeding due to their restricted tongue movement. The surgery allows them to latch on more effectively, leading to better nutrition and growth.
Laser dentistry is less invasive than traditional dental procedures, which can mean less pain and discomfort during and after treatment.
A tongue that is free to move can more effectively clean the mouth, reducing the risk of dental problems. After tongue-tie surgery, children may find it easier to brush their teeth and may experience fewer cavities and other oral health issues.
Tongue-tie surgery has a high success rate, with few complications.
Took my 13 month old to his first dentist visit. The office staff is very professional and friendly. Most importantly Dr. Sholander and her staff were very empathetic and all of our questions and concerns were taken care of. I highly recommend it!
Dr. Sholander is a BRILLIANT dentist. To begin with- the practice is very well run; the team is so sweet and well-trained. The office is beautiful and clean. My kids love it there. But outside of that, Dr. Sholander identified an issue with my son that his pediatrician, a consultant, or teachers were unable to pinpoint. I knew something was off but no one could give me clear answers. Within a few minutes of meeting my son, she saw what I was concerned about. She took the time to give me excellent referrals and come up with a plan for next steps. I am amazed at how good she is. But again, the practice overall is welcoming, fun, clean, and the environment is so happy and warm. Highly recommended!
They truly care for children. I very much appreciate the time and advise I received from Dr. Goodman. Thank you for all the information to better help my daughter. Also her team was patient with my little one. They kept her busy and happy during the appointment. Is a great place for little ones!
